Places
Since 1918 roads, streets, avenues and squares etc. were named after battlefields as permanent memorials. However, I can't help but wonder how a soldier who returned home and encountered these memorials to the horrors he had experienced felt about the names. Many of those streets are now quiet leafy places inhabited by people who in many cases are unaware of the history of their address. Such is the resonance of WW1 that these names are still being allocated in new housing estate
