India and Pakistan
I travelled to India in 1978 and then in 1980 I returned to photograph in India and Pakistan.
Steam predominated on all of the various gauges, however generally locomotives were not well maintained. I rode in the cab of a WP class passenger loco. and part of the cab floor was missing, a challenge for the fireman who literally ‘took it in his stride’. The Darjeeling line hadn’t been discovered by tourists and was a wonderful experience, it was quite easy to run ahead of the train to photograph it as it traversed the mountain villages and the mountains. Pakistan’s locomotives were generally in better condition, especially some ancient 4-4-0 types that were kept for working a branch line.
