Charles J. Page: documentary photographer

                                     Australia

PictureThe back fence can be seen behind the truck
After WW2 my parents had a new baby (me) and were struggling to pay for a rented room. To alleviate that expense dad purchased two surplus army huts from an army base in central Victoria. They were designed by the military to be transportable, now known as ‘flat-packed’. He and his brother transported them on dad’s semi-trailer and re-assembled them in their parent’s back yard. On the other side of the back fence was a heavily trafficked train line and I remember climbing on the fence to watch the trains and wave to the crews. I took my first photographs with mum’s box camera from that fence.
Steam trains were always my favourite subject matter.
