Charles J. Page: documentary photography
Picture
Picture
Grozny, Chechnya 1995
My practice as a documentary photographer spans over forty-five years. I have travelled extensively having photographed in over 60 countries.  During that time I have undertaken commissioned work for local and state galleries, local, state and national governments, the International Red Cross and the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. My work is held in numerous national and international public and private collections. My practice has addressed a variety of social and political issues ranging from war zones to the Antarctic and is informed by an understanding of the issues being addressed and an awareness of the contemporary trends in the discourse of documentary photography. My photographs are about the societies that I encounter and interact with, as well as about me. My work is as much a document about my life as it is about the lives and issues that I document in my work, documentary photography is firmly embedded in the hypothesis of shared experiences. The viewer shares not only the vision and experience of the photographer, but also has a direct connection with the subject via the photograph. The image is the vehicle for sharing experiences and emotions.
