The struggle to save the Saemangeum was lost. As it turned into a desert the South Korean government organised the destruction of the fishing fleet and the sale of salvageable parts such as motors. There was nowhere for the boats or the fishermen to move to, all other fishing ports had their quota of boats. Perfectly sound boats were smashed while their owners looked on.
